(Approved March 11, 2004)
To provide that the Structures and Public Highways Naming Commission of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico shall designate the new coliseum located in the Hato Rey sector of the Municipality of San Juan as the "Coliseo de Puerto Rico José Miguel Agrelot."
The illustrious Puerto Rican, José Miguel Agrelot, was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico, on April 21, 1927. He studied at the University of Puerto Rico, where he obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Economics and Political Sciences. His first efforts in the artistic field were through radio broadcasting in 1945. He started to work as an actor in a radio program at the age of eighteen, becoming one of the outstanding comedians in this media, and later, in Puerto Rican television. Thus, his first character, known as Torito Fuertes, the star of the program "El Colegio de la Alegría", broadcasted by WIAC at that time, was born.
Using figures of his daily life as his models, he created a series of characters that were highly accepted by the Puerto Rican audiences. Among the most prominent we could mention "Don Rodríguez," "Pancho Matanzas," "Serafín Sinfín," and "El Profesor Pulula," who always began his presentations with a call to peace with his characteristic phrase warning us that "Nothing is engendered by violence; only love is fruitful". But his is most outstanding character and was most popular among all Puerto Ricans, was the famous "Don Cholito", who in a light,
comical manner, commented on national and international daily events on the television program "Encabulla y vuelve y tira."
An important fact in the fruitful career of this distinguished and honorable son of our country was that of uninterruptedly transmitting his morning radio program, "Su alegre despertar," for fifty-five years, which earned him a Guinness World Records award for such a spectacular feat. In addition, "La Ciudad Torito," in "Parque de las Ciencias," in Bayamón," in which countless memorabilia and awards won by this comedian throughout his intense professional career are kept, was dedicated to him.
José Miguel Agrelot was known as a human being who cultivated poetry and literature. He is one of the personalities most admired and beloved by his people, not only for this impressive artistic career, but also because of his deep sense of humanism and altruism, his firm moral values and his selfless commitment to his country and his compatriots. It is important to mention that his projection with the people transcended social classes and generations, becoming without a doubt and by his own merits, a worthy representative of our national Puerto Rican identity.
This Legislature is honored to recognize the life and works of this illustrious master of comedy by designating the new coliseum located in the Hato Rey sector of the Municipality of San Juan, as the "Coliseo de Puerto Rico José Miguel Agrelot", thus perpetuating for history the memory of this distinguished Puerto Rican.
