(N. B. 3657) (Approved September 3, 2003)
To amend Section 30 of Act No. 218 of May 6, 1951, as amended, known as the "Teachers' Retirement System Act," to increase the maximum monthly amount that a teacher who is pensioned due to physical disability may receive for work performed without affecting his/her life annuity-payment.
All Puerto Ricans are proud of our public education system teachers. They are dedicated to serving the people, unselfishly and devotedly transmitting their knowledge to our children to turn them into the professionals of the future.
Act No. 218 of May 6, 1951, as amended, known as the "Teachers' Retirement Act," was approved with the purpose of helping teachers by guaranteeing them a safe and prosperous retirement. Sometimes teachers, for reasons beyond their control may become a physically disabled, and are bound to retire before the time they have foreseen.
At present, Section 30 of Act No. 218, establishes that teachers retired due to physical disability, cease to receive their life annuity payments to which they are entitled, as soon as the disability ends and they reenter government service, or earn more than six hundred (600) dollars. Such amount is very small, due to the high cost of living, therefore it is necessary to increase it. In view of this situation, the Legislature deems it is warranted,
and as an act of social justice, to increase their remuneration for services rendered from six hundred (600) dollars to one thousand $(1,000)$ dollars, without reducing their life annuity payment.
Section 1.- Section 30 of Act No. 218 of May 6, 1951, as amended, is hereby amended to read as follows: "Section 30.- Suspension of Life Annuity Payments for Physical Disability; Tests
Teachers retired due to physical disability shall cease to receive life annuity payments as soon as the disability ends, or they re-enter government service. The life annuity payments of those who as engaged in nongovernment occupations which are remunerated, shall also cease, provided it is grater than one thousand $(1,000)$ dollars a month.
Section 2.- This Act shall take effect immediately after its approval.
I hereby certify to the Secretary of State that the following Act No. 262 (H.B. 3657) of the $5^{ ext {th }}$ Session of the $14^{ ext {th }}$ Legislature of Puerto Rico:
AN ACT to amend Section 30 of Act No. 218 of May 6, 1951, as amended, known as the "Teachers' Retirement System Act," to increase the maximum monthly amount that a teacher who is pensioned due to physical disability may receive for work performed without affecting his/her life annuity-payment, has been translated from Spanish to English and that the English version is correct.
In San Juan, Puerto Rico, today $30^{ ext {th }}$ of September of 2004.
