The Museum of Modern Art is an autonomous entity that since its creation has performed an important work in the development of fine arts in Puerto Rico, and in the process of creating an awareness and educating the people with regard to them and fine arts in general, through the collection, documentation and exhibition of works of art of distinguished modern artists of Puerto Rico, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the development of a choice program of complementary activities.
The Museum has done outstanding work in the promotion of fine arts among our youths and the people in general, by conducting educational and cultural activities, as well as by maintaining an important specialized Document Center on modern art, including audiovisual as well as documentary material.
Since 1994, through Act No. 91 of August 19, 1994, the Government of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico has collaborated financially with the Museum of Modern Art through contributions that increase gradually until
1994, when the annual appropriation of two hundred and fifty thousand (250,000.00) dollars becomes permanent. This appropriation has the purpose of grant the Museum with the financial tools needed to promote the art of painting and sculpturing, as well as to conduct educational and cultural activities with regard to fine arts in order to promote the preservation, development and diffusion thereof. From that date on, the Act appropriates two hundred and fifty thousand $(250,000.00)$ dollars permanently, with the matching of funds by the institution to ensure compliance with such an important cultural mission. However, the financial needs of the Museum and its projections have increased, yet it lacks the indispensable financial resources.
It is necessary and urgent to increase the appropriation of funds so that the Museum may continue and improve its great work, for benefit of our people.
