AN ACT

To redesignate the Calle Marina of the Barrio Puerta de Tierra of the City of San Juan as "Paseo de los Veteranos Puertorriqueños" (Veterans' Boulevard) in honor and recognition of all veterans who were born in our Country of Puerto Rico, who have sacrificed their lives in defense of liberty and democracy.

STATEMENT OF MOTIVES

The People of Puerto Rico have been intellectually linked to the United States of America since before 1898. However, this date marks the beginning of a series of changes in the relationship between both jurisdictions. One of these is the granting of the United States citizenship to native Puerto Ricans. This historical step gave Puerto Ricans what many consider a moral obligation: To serve in the common defense of the United States nation and of the Island of Puerto Rico.

During the World Wars, the Korean Conflict, the Vietnam War and the Persian Gulf War, and other warlike activities of common defense, Puerto Ricans have been present, in the battlefield, as well as giving moral and emotional civilian support to their soldiers.

At all times, these Puerto Rican brothers and sisters have risked their life in the fight for the freedom we enjoy today; and for the democratic

principles by which our lives are governed. These war veterans have been recognized, by law, with a permanent monument: the Memorial Monument.

At present, a boulevard is being built on Calle Marina, just across from the Memorial Monument, located at the South of the Capitol Building and to the west of the new multilevel parking building of the Capitol. We deem that this is the perfect place to establish the Paseo de los Veteranos Puertorriquenos, (Veteran's Boulevard.)

The Legislature of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico wishes to complement the recognition of our People, to these men and women who have left a permanent mark in our society for their courage; a mark they hold as a standard and that shall always be a reason of admiration and pride for all who believe in democracy.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF PUERTO RICO:

Section 1.- To redesignate the Calle Marina in the Barrio Puerta de Tierra of San Juan as Paseo de los Veteranos Puertorriqueños (Veterans’ Boulevard) in honor and recognition of all veterans who were born in our Country of Puerto Rico, who have sacrificed their lives in defense of liberty and democracy.

Section 2.- An official activity shall be held to make known the change of the name of Calle Marina in the Barrio Puerta de Tierra of the City of San Juan as Paseo de los Veteranos Puertorriqueños (Veterans’ Boulevard).

Section 3.- The Buildings and Public Roads Designating Committee of the Government of Puerto Rico shall take the necessary measures to comply with the provisions of this Act.

Section 4.- A copy of this Bill as approved shall be remitted to the communications media for public disclosure.

Section 5.- This Act shall take effect immediately after its approval.
